I’m what you might call a passive observer of spoken word poetry. I enjoy the energy and the atmosphere and the passion of spoken word, but I have never felt the urge to stand up and perform myself. I mostly watch spoken word on YouTube because I haven’t managed to convince anyone I know to go with me yet (except my friend, Emily, who once agreed to attend an open mic night with me in our second year of uni – thank you and sorry again!). I thought I’d share with you some of my favourite spoken word artists/poems today.

Sabrina Benhaim – “Explaining My Depression to My Mother”

*Trigger warning for depression/anxiety/mental health*

Aisling Fahey – “Things I Would Teach You If You Would Listen”

Phil Kaye – “Beginning, Middle & End”

Sarah Kay – “Postcards”
